Student Achievement
“The Champions program definitely made me stay on track. I was obsessed with checking my grades on Student Connect and did about 3-4 times a week, even on breaks and weekends.” -Lila
“Champions made me realize that learning is making money in a way, but it took a literal cash incentive for me to realize that. Me and my mentor are very close.” -Kameron
“The champions program made me look at life differently. In life, there are no make up exams and extra credit opportunities. education is something no one can take away from you.”

-Shalaya

Students on track to meet their goals this semester:

Gates Millennium Scholarship

Carlos Pernell and Crystal Fletcher
Carlos Pernell and Crystal Fletcher (Pictured right) have been very successful as participants in the Champions program.  So successful, in fact, that they have both earned the Gates Millennium Scholarship.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship is a financial resource funded by Bill Gates, which is awarded to only 1,000 students across the country. On average, students who attain this scholarship are provided over $12,000 each academic year. The GMS pertains not only to each given students bachelors degree, but to masters and doctoral degrees if they choose to pursue them.

Carlos and Crystal, now students at Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan, are the second and third recent WMHS graduates to receive the GMS.  Samuel Ekanem, a 2013 graduate, also earned the scholarship and is currently enrolled at Harvard University.

Champions of Wayne: High Achievers

Picture
Students that hold a GPA of 3.8 or higher and want to be a part of the Champions program are considered "high achievers". These students are required to set a measurable goal for themselves outside of their grade point average. Some of these goals have included running marathons, doing community service, tutoring, and reading books. Once the goal is selected, they are required to turn in an essay stating what they would like to do for the semester, in addition to keeping their GPA in good shape.
